Unshakable Faith of our Founders
In celebrating the birth of the Savior, and preparing for a new decade, my thoughts turned to America's Founders and their unshakeable faith. How else could they face the might of Great Britain in defense of their God-given rights? Of course, those in Great Britain thought the colonists were in violation of the truths of Scripture in rising up against the King! But, as proud Americans, we have no doubt that King George III was on the wrong side of God's favor. Parliament and George III seemingly had determined what God wanted in their attempt to subdue the American colonists, and it seems that Scripture was not going to get in their way...
Could it be that many of today's Christians are doing the same? Have we neglected to seek and adhere to the teachings of Scripture? Have we determined "God's will" and failed to seek discernment of the Holy Spirit?
In 2016, many Evangelical and Catholic Christians determined that they could not vote for Hilary Clinton. Therefore, it was decided that they must vote for the lesser of two evils. Their vote, and blessing, went to Donald Trump.
Was this decision in accordance with Scriptural teaching? Was serious prayer offered until, "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding" did in fact guard our hearts and minds? Did we, within our communities of worship, call for a day of prayer and fasting as our Founders often did in response to such a monumental situation?
Most of us ignored the simple truth and comfort of Proverbs 3: 5-6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Instead, we voted for the "lesser of two evils." In doing so, and in continuing to ignore such teachings, have we unleashed God's wrath? By determining God's will apart from His guidance, we must accept another truth: Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Galatians 6:7.
